Anna Chapman: How The FBI Nab Alleged Russian Spy?
Details of the criminal complaint as Chapman allegedly used a fake identity, coded radio signals and the encrypted data, to avoid detection.
The complaint alleged that Chapman, 28, uses a specially configured laptop to send the message to another computer, an unnamed Russian official – the handler, who was under the supervision of the FBI.
Laptop exchanges occurred 10 times, always on Wednesdays, until June, when an undercover FBI got involved, prosecutors said. An agent posing as a Russian consulate employee and wearing a wire, arranged a meeting with Chapman in the cafe of Manhattan, according to prosecutors.
During the meeting, they initially spoke Russian, but then agreed to switch to English to attract less attention to himself, the complaint says, telling of their recorded conversation.
“I need more information about you, I can not speak,” said Chapman.
“OK.” My name is Roman, “the agent replied.” I work in the consulate. ”
The agent said that he knew she was headed to Moscow for two weeks “to officially talk about your work, but until then,” I have a job for you tomorrow. ”
Objective: To deliver a fraudulent passport to another woman working as a spy.
“Are you ready for this step?” he asked.
“Certainly,” she said, according to the complaint.
The agent gave her his seat and told her to keep the magazine in some way – so it will be recognized as a Russian agent who, in turn, will confirm his identity, saying: “Excuse me, but does not have met in California in the summer?
But Chapman was a cunning, prosecutors said.
“You’re positive no one sees? They say she told an undercover agent after the received instructions.
The authorities say that it was concerned to buy a cell phone and make a “flurry of calls” in Russia. In one intercepted call, the man told her that she may be disclosed. The complaints said that he told her that she must surrender your passport to the police and get out of the country.
She was arrested in New York City police precinct after the implementation of this recommendation the authorities said.
Authorities say that the secret of advice to her was “Your colleagues in Moscow, they know you’re doing a good job. So keep it.”
