Bobby Gonzalez Arrested
Seton Hall dismissed Coach Bobby Gonzalez on Wednesday, ending his tumultuous four-year tenure a day after an ignominious first-round loss in the National Invitation Tournament and the arrest of a player who had been kicked off the team.
Gonzalez was 66-59 in four seasons at the university, and his teams failed to make the N.C.A.A. tournament field in all four seasons. He received a contract extension last year, which was to run through 2015, but his future was clouded by dissatisfaction with Gonzalez’s fiery personality.
The loss to Texas Tech on Tuesday night was marred by the ejection of the star forward Herb Pope, who punched an opposing player in the groin. Gonzalez also received his seventh technical foul of the season.
Also Tuesday, a Pirates player, Robert Mitchell, was arrested in Newark and charged with kidnapping, robbery, burglary and possession of a weapon, according to a law enforcement official in Essex County. Mitchell was accused along with another person of breaking into a house in South Orange, duct-taping eight people and stealing cash and personal items. The police have not identified the other person.
Gonzalez had kicked Mitchell off the team over the weekend after Mitchell made comments critical of Gonzalez. He was quoted in The Record of northern New Jersey saying, “It’s hard to stay consistent as a player, when the coach isn’t consistent.”
Patrick Hobbs, dean of the Seton Hall Law School, who has been overseeing the athletic department since July, announced the firing in a statement released by the university. “Performance and success are not measured solely by wins and losses, but also in the conduct of those associated with the program,” he said. “We have expectations as to how our coaches and players will conduct themselves, and they are expected to treat everyone they interact with, whether officials, the press or our students, with the utmost respect, maturity and professionalism. Those core expectations must be met.”
In November, Keon Lawrence, a junior guard who transferred from Missouri, was arrested after driving the wrong way on the Garden State Parkway and causing a two-car accident. Lawrence was charged with assault by auto and driving with a suspended license. Gonzalez suspended Lawrence, whose criminal case is still pending.
Gonzalez has been a divisive figure not only at Seton Hall but also in his previous job at Manhattan. Though his teams had not made the N.C.A.A. tournament in his first three seasons, he was given a contract extension. But Lawrence’s arrest also drew attention to Gonzalez’s recruiting. The three players he signed for next season have not qualified academically. He has also struggled to recruit local players.
Seton Hall fired Coach Bobby Gonzalez while one of the player gets arrested who was kicked off the team by Bobby Gonzalez.
Bobby Gonzalez had four year tenure with Seton Hall and was fired this Wednesday. Bobby Gonzalez’s firing doesn’t come as a surprise in the wake of the teams losses in the National Invitation Tournament and the overall poor performance throughout his tenure. Bobby Gonzalez was thought to be a fiery coach who did not even get his team into the NCAA championship. Bobby Gonzalez’s team did not make it to the NCAA Tournament in all four seasons but his contract as coach was extended through 2015. However, his conduct was objectionable and his teaching skills questionable. Considering the fact that his team got seven technical fouls in one season speaks a lot about the training of Bobby Gonzalez. The player who got arrested on serious charges was also kicked off the team by Bobby Gonzalez for speaking against him.
