Dustin Johnson

Dustin Johnson:Tiger Woods himself thrust back into contention at U.S. Open Golf Championship yesterday by matching the lowest score of the tournament, a 5-under 66 that left him five shots behind the leader entering the final round.

Woods birdied eight of his final 15 holes, including three to the end of the round at Pebble Beach Golf Links in California, to get to one under par. It is one of three golfers under par, trailing fellow American Dustin Johnson (-6) and Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland (-3).

Winless since his return to golf after his admission of marital infidelity, three times U.S. Open champion vaulted to third place yesterday 25. Woods birdied five of the last nine holes, once again hearing the roar of the crowd and display their hand pump celebration.

“This has been a while,” Woods said. “I had not played well enough for someone to cheer for anything. It was nice to actually put in place on the back nine and I started right away in the league. Everyone was so excited and inflamed, it was a great atmosphere to play in front. ”

Woods and Johnson are both 5 under yesterday’s match to Phil Mickelson’s second-round 66 for the second lowest score this year’s majors.

Mickelson followed by a 2-over 73 yesterday when the left started with consecutive bogeys, was forced to hit a bullet right-handed en route to a double bogey and closed with a penalty in the 18th hole. He is in sixth place in a more.

“I’m quite a few shots back. Probably more than I thought I would, “said Mickelson, five-time U.S. Open runner-up.” But anything can happen on Sunday and if you make a move you can make a lot of ground. ”

Johnson’s Eagle

Johnson, 25, jumped up the standings with two birdies and an eagle in a stretch of four holes yesterday. He eagled the 284-yard par-4 fourth hole, after reaching the green with his tee shot. Johnson finished his round with consecutive birdies, including a 30-foot putt on the par-3 17th, to form a three-shot cushion on McDowell, who made bogeys at holes 16 and 17.

Johnson had a previous success on the Monterey Peninsula. Two of his three wins U.S. PGA Tour came at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in 2009 and 2010.

“I really like playing here,” said Johnson, who tied for 40th and 48th in his previous U.S. Open appearances the past two years. “Nothing will change with the game plan.”

Woods will be paired with France GrĂ©gory Havret in group penultimate day behind Johnson and McDowell. Havret was even par with two-time winner of the U.S. Open Ernie Els of South Africa. Woods tee off at 2:05 pm local time – 5:05 pm on the East Coast.

Prime Time Golf

Most of today’s final will be broadcast in prime time in the New York area, the U.S. largest media market, and with Woods back in contention could be the best new golf course has since been his victory at the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, according to Brad Adgate, research director at Horizon Media, an advertising agency based in New York.

“If someone is happier than Tiger is NBC Sports,” Adgate said in an e-mail interview, referring to the fourth round of the tournament broadcast in the United States. “His rise in the rankings should boost ratings for the final round.”

Woods win at Torrey Pines, where he beat Rocco Mediate in overtime 19-hole, produced the highest ratings in the U.S. Open since his previous victory at Bethpage Black course in New York in 2002. The 2008 tournament marked the first time the U.S. Open was broadcast in prime time.

Tiger Rally

The largest 36-hole deficit Woods has overcome to win a major tournament was six strokes at the Masters in 2005. He started the third round last seven shots back and fell back nine with bogeys early.

Woods recovered with three birdies on holes 4 lines, 5 and 6 before making a bogey on the eighth hole.

Woods then shot 31 on the back nine birdie putts from the holes 11 and 13 and adding three more to finish his round. He gave a fist pump after birdie on the par-4 16th hole dropped. Woods was once again the fans to their feet to the par-3 17, where he pointed to the sky after his curling 12-foot putt from the fringe dropped into the cup.

On the par-5 18, Woods hit 3-wood for his second shot about 260 yards, then jumped to his left to get a better view around a tree, laid his hands on his knees and shouted at his ball to get the green. He stopped about 15 feet from the flag and Woods threaded After missing his birdie attempt at eagle.

“Stretch nine holes”

“All open I won, I had a stretch of nine holes,” Woods said. “He did not have to be on a back nine or nine before, just one after nine holes where you put it up. I’m back in the championship.”

The last tournament in which Woods won end after 54 holes was the 2009 Memorial, where he shot a final round 65 to overcome a four-stroke deficit and beat Jim Furyk by one.
